Centriq

IOS App

Centriq set out to help people get the most out of the products around them. The company realized that managing a home can be frustrating, looking for information while sifting through a collection of random or missing appliance manuals. They understood this was a common and complex problem that needed a resourceful modern solution.

Background

The client had a working prototype in place. Initial user tests were positive but revealed that the overall experience fell short of its primary goals. The existing app had a narrow view of how users visualized and searched their items. Users also had trouble understanding how to add and place items within the app, and the digital space became cluttered quickly.

UX, UI & Visual Design Lead

The project had just started the discovery process when I joined the company. I quickly stepped in to support the interview sessions and to gain a better understanding of customer feedback. Next, we conducted a usability audit on the existing prototype to evaluate critical user and task flows and common user pitfalls. We also conducted guerilla research to study how users preferred to organize their items.

Our visual design process involved pushing their existing Centriq brand further. Each concept involved establishing an own-able interaction model that expressed the digital experience uniquely.

Solution

The final design was a consolidated and fluid experience. Reducing the steps needed to add items was a primary focal point and a measurable metric for success.

We also established a design system that allowed for greater usability and communication in a digital space. Vivid color emphasized key elements. Softer neutrals kept the content lighter, giving the iconography and product photography a greater impact.

Based on our different activities, we were able to tweak how the process was presented to different audiences. First-time users now get a richer video experience while experienced users are seeing a more streamlined approach for adding items quickly.

Result

What resulted was an award-winning app that gathered high praise upon release. Even though they’re continuing to work through backend issues, it’s grown in popularity, even being featured on the TV show This Old House.
